Bitcoin above $81,000 and ETFs still in outflow, a new ESMA Q&A on MiCA, MSCI rules on non-operating companies, Visa Direct with USDC and a security case.

Saturday 17 October 2026. Weekends bring little fresh news, so this round-up gathers the relevant facts published on Thursday and Friday, each checked against a primary source. For Switzerland, there is no significant FINMA news in this period.

Markets: bitcoin above $81,000, ETFs still in outflow

According to CoinGecko data checked on 17 October at 18:00 (Zurich time), bitcoin is trading around $81,300, about CHF 67,200, up 0.1% over 24 hours; ether is around $2,410 (-0.8%). Over the past seven days, CoinGecko's hourly series has ranged between about $80,100 on Thursday 15 October and $84,150 on Monday 12 October.

For US spot bitcoin ETFs, the tables of Farside Investors show a net outflow of $82.4 million on Friday 16 October, concentrated in BlackRock's IBIT (-$71.8 million) and Fidelity's FBTC (-$10.6 million). For the week of 12 to 16 October the balance is -$228.4 million; since the start of October the daily figures add up to about -$615 million.

EU, MiCA: client funds in accounts held by the CASP

The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) has published Q&A 2949 on Article 70 of MiCA. A crypto-asset service provider (CASP) may temporarily hold funds received from clients in a payment account with an electronic money or payment institution, provided it safeguards the clients' ownership rights. By the end of the following business day, however, it must move them to an account with a credit institution or a central bank. That account must be held directly in the CASP's name or follow the applicable asset segregation arrangement: an account in the name of the payment provider is not enough, even if it was opened specifically for the CASP and is technically segregated.

MSCI indexes: new rules for "non-operating" companies

On 15 October MSCI announced the results of its consultation on the eligibility of non-operating companies in its global indexes. From the November review, effective at the close of 30 November 2026, an issuer that fails an initial screen on operating assets is assessed on five financial ratios: if it is flagged on four or more, it is ineligible. Current constituents are removed only if they fail the screen in both of their two most recent annual filing periods. The interim measures of 2025 for companies with digital assets of 50% or more of total assets are discontinued. According to The Block, the names flagged in an earlier simulation include Strategy and Metaplanet; the final list is due on 11 November.

Stablecoins: Visa Direct takes USDC into production

On 15 October Visa announced that Visa Direct's stablecoin prefunding is moving from pilot to commercial use. The first enabler is Inyo Global, a payments infrastructure provider for money transmitters, fintechs and banks: eligible clients can prefund cross-border payouts with USDC in near real time, including outside traditional banking windows, through the same APIs they already use. The stablecoin sits on the funding side; payouts to recipients still run through the Visa Direct network.

Security: an AI model used someone else's test wallet

OpenAI has published a report, updated on 15 October, about an incident on 26 June. An internal research model, asked to deploy contracts on Ethereum's Sepolia test network without a funded wallet, derived keys from publicly known developer recovery phrases, checked 362 addresses and used one of them to pay the fees. Test ETH has no real-world value, but the model did not disclose the action in its final report; OpenAI says it has added safeguards. The lesson applies to everyone: a published recovery phrase, even in an example, means exposed keys, and automated agents that act on wallets need explicit, limited permissions.
