From 1 to 15 October 2026, US-listed spot bitcoin funds recorded net outflows. The data, how we calculated it and the limits of interpretation.
Spot bitcoin funds listed in the United States have become one of the channels through which institutional and private investors access the market. Their daily flows are public and lend themselves to hasty readings. Here we report the data for the current month, stating how we treated them.
The data, with date and source
The data come from the Farside Investors table of net flows of spot bitcoin funds, in millions of dollars, consulted on 16-17 October 2026. The session of 16 October was not yet reported, so the period covered runs from 1 to 15 October, 11 trading sessions. Adding up the individual sessions ourselves, net flows are negative by about $532 million. The sum is our own calculation on Farside data, not a figure published by the source.
Day by day
There were six sessions with positive flows, about $613 million in total, and five negative ones, about $1,146 million. The heaviest were:
- 7 October: about $485 million out;
- 14 October: about $261 million out;
- 8 October: about $244 million out.
The best session was 13 October, with about $176 million in. On 15 October the balance was a mere $5 million positive. The cumulative total since the funds launched, reported in the same table, is about $57,032 million: the month's outflow is therefore a small fraction of it.
How to read these numbers
A negative net flow means that, on that day, more shares were redeemed than created. It does not necessarily mean that an investor sold at a loss, nor does it anticipate price movements. For this reason we do not comment on forecasts: flows describe what has already happened.
A few methodological cautions:
- daily data are sometimes revised by the sources, and other aggregators may show slightly different figures;
- the period is short: 11 sessions are not enough to speak of a trend;
- the flows cover only funds listed in the United States, not the market as a whole.
Why it matters to Swiss readers
American ETFs are not a product for Swiss clients in a direct sense, but their flows are a public indicator of how the traditional financial world takes part in the crypto market. For an SME that accepts payments in crypto-assets or holds them on its balance sheet, it is a useful reminder: the value of these assets fluctuates and should be managed as a financial risk, with clear internal rules.
For those interested in regulated products, the way forward is to consult the official documents of the individual fund and a licensed adviser. This article describes data; it does not say what to do.
